Ebola: An Ongoing Public Health Emergency of International Concern

Abstract

The declaration by the World Health Organization on 17 May 2026 that the Ebola outbreak affecting the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda constitutes a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) represents a defining moment in the global response to viral hemorrhagic diseases. This declaration signals that the outbreak is no longer confined to a localized epidemic but has evolved into a regional and international health threat requiring coordinated surveillance, laboratory strengthening, infection-prevention measures, and emergency clinical response.
